Hubble's Instruments: COS - Cosmic Origins Spectrograph

The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph is a ultraviolet spectrograph that will provide low-medium resolution ultraviolet spectroscopy.

COS will be ten times more sensitive than previous spectrographs flown on Hubble.

It is been developed by the Center for Astrophysics and Space Astronomy (CASA) at the Astrophysics Research Laboratory (ARL) of the University of Colorado - Boulder in the USA.

COS will investigate astronomical subjects such as the formation and evolution of galaxies, the origin of planetary and stellar systems, the cold interstellar medium and large scale structure in the Universe.
