Science with Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescopes — V

9 June 2016

The signature series of conferences sponsored by ESA highlighting the scientific impact of the Hubble Space Telescope continues next year with a new event planned in Venice, Italy, from 20 to 24 March 2017.

This time, the scope will be broader. With the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope expected to be a viable observatory well into the 2022 and beyond, and the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope planned launch in the autumn 2018, we can start planning for possibly several years of overlap between the two missions — a very exciting scientific opportunity!

Both missions have a significant European involvement. So it is very appropriate to organize a conference in Europe, dedicated primarily to the synergy between Hubble and Webb, and to how the community can best prepare to take immediate advantage of the amazing opportunities that will be presented. We will of course also showcase the latest Hubble results. Because of the extended scope we will use a slightly different title, but the same numbering scheme, so this conference will be #V in the series.

The venue of the conference will be Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti, in Venice, site of the #III conference in the series in 2010. The amazing success of that conference convinced us that we had found a near-perfect location, and we were very glad to be welcomed back by the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, which will also be a co-sponsor of the conference.

We are planning on a four day format — Monday to Thursday — with an additional fifth day (on Friday) of hands-on demos. It will be possible to access and work with the JWST exposure time calculators, organised by the ESA/JWST team led by Marco Sirianni. The conference itself will include invited and contributed talks, and there will be an opportunity to present posters. The Science Organizing Committee is almost in place and the first announcement will go out very soon.

Keep an eye on the STScI website for the conference announcements, and if you have any questions please email us at ScienceV@stsci.edu.

We hope to see you all in Venice next March!
