Featured Space Artist: Birgit Sennewald

I have painted since I was able to speak and take my first own steps. I was married and have one son, Maximilian, who is 11 years old.

After school I worked writing books, in graphics, in advertising and in marketing for different companies and afterwards I worked in my own advertising agency. While I was working for a lot of great companies, I was able to learn more about colours and I got to work in other techniques, like for instance airbrush, and also I also worked with lots of different materials.

I have made a lot of ordered works never thinking about my own style.

In 2000 I became very ill. So I had to stop all my working activities. I spent a lot of time thinking about my life and my way of living. After the first diagnose, what physicians call cancer, I was shocked. They told that my time left to live would be very short. I have now lived longer then the physicians have predicted. I established my own way of living in deep natural love and peace, in painting, in being a human and in respecting life itself. The reason for changing my life was very hard, but I got a chance to love and hope, pray and believe. In a short time I received more than I ever could have been given in previous years. Creating is healing. I found my own way in creating art. Shown to me by something I called my “angels” who accompany me.

Previously I was working with the material, but now the material and I work together. I touch the colours, touch the material, and during this process I get the idea what to do with it. Sometimes I get an inspiration to create and I convert it directly. Sometimes I create a piece of art in 3 hours, sometimes it takes many weeks to finish it. Sometimes the material tells me what to do, and sometimes I see the next part of my work in the material. I like to work with natural materials and natural colours. Sometimes I take everything I can get my hands on to create my art, also the colours. Bubble bath, spices, ash from a cigarette and so on. Sometimes I don’t need brushes and other tools to create my art - only my hands and my thoughts. The touching touches my soul.

But recently there has been another aspect in painting pictures: I dreamt about it. Especially in my space-arts I was inspired in dreams. I saw the pictures and had to paint them directly in the middle of the night. I was very surprised to see a lot of similarities in my art and the pictures from the Hubble Space Telescope.

In my thoughts, the global viewing and global thinking becomes a new dimension. I like to show this in my art, because they tell a story written in the past, they write the present and will be writing the future.

Starrynight
This is picture is a part of a composition called, Abend(ge)mahl(t), consisting of 7 parts. The whole picture is ca. 104x55 cm. Material: oil-pastels on wood and linen. Everyone could create his own arrangement with these 7 pieces of art.

New-age-holy-communion: One “eats” all what will be presented to him.

Junkfood
Supersaturation
incessant flood of irritations
mass manipulation by media
exercise of power
murder and homicide
falsehood
drugs
etc....

Gladly we accept everything!

Comfortably we lean back and can be full-plugged, up to be bursting in aggression, rage, hate, depression and illness.

Good appetite!

S.O.(ul)S.
Size: 80x60 cm

Material: Acryl mixed technique on linen

S.O. (ul) S.(sailor) in universe

It was a cold winters day.
Anywhere at the sea. The first time really alone.

„Take this canvas my lovely
and fill it up with colours. Let it become.
Take your whole variety and put it in this
painting. You will never know what tomorrow
will bring and you‘ll have to end this picture
with your spirit.“

The colours dropped onto the canvas
and my hands touched them.

Forgotten mind in the magnificence of colours.
My soul was churned up and my eyes have seen
what I created. Coincident?!

A feast for the eyes of all viewers,
but only the soul knows, where it’s coming from
and where it’s going to.

An endless sadness, surrounded me while
I painted this picture and a tear run over my face.

But this painting will let me look hopeful into
the future. I am on the journey to myself,
and this painting will accompany me the whole time.

Colours may give us life
and we‘ll may give them back to life.

st.ONE.
Size: 15x15 cm
Material: soapstone

On the 08.02.2004 the hubble-telescope

sent a picture to the earth. The scientists were inspired.

A German newspaper published this picture,
and my friend called me up. She was very
excited and told me: „Look at this picture,
it reminds my of your arts.“

„An amusing coincidence...?“

Global thoughts…

„Put this stone in your hand,
close your eyes and feel him.
Look at him, rotate him, and get
an emotion for this material.
Listen inside yourself.“

„If you form a stone with your own hands,
you will see in every second a mirror of
your soul.“

„Detached from the unit, from the thick
nebular of confusing thoughts and emotions.“

… obliged and released at the same time!

Angel over Berlin
Size: 80x60 cm
Material: mixed technique on linen

Born on this earth.

Landed in Berlin.
Still not arrived.
because…

Look at these paintings and let them live…

Like you live in your own soul!

Accompany me on my journey
and hold my hand.

Only a little while in the endlessness…

Rising
Size: 80x60 cm
Material: mixed technique on linen

… and every time in the present I see the pictures from distant galaxies.

The Hubble Telescope gives me the evidence.
We know more than we want to know.

I will sail along, on my endless journey
through the earth of colours in my soul.
Like the old seafarer told us about
Cap Horn and a round ball,
called earth.

Like they adored of lightening stars
above their ships in the tepid nights
on the ocean.

... even there‘ll be so much see and I‘ll like to
tell you about this…
