ESA/Hubble/JWST Science Newsletter
15 December 2023

-By Chris Evans-

It has been a remarkable year, with both Hubble and Webb in science operations. The exciting and profound early results from JWST have continued to wow us, alongside the latest results from Hubble’s unique UV–visible capabilities. Looking ahead to 2024, we are excited to share our plans for the Stars, Gas & Dust in the Universe conference in Porto, Portugal in late April. This builds on our long-running series of successful ESA-sponsored conferences on science with the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes, and you can read more here.

The Hubble Cycle 31 Time Allocation Committee met in August to recommend programmes for Cycle 31, which started on 1 December. Demand for time remained very competitive, with an overall success rate for proposals of 16.7%, and with 17% of the accepted programmes led by PIs in the ESA Member States. Congratulations to those of you with Cycle 31 programmes now underway, and thank you so much to those of you who served on the topical panels and Executive Committee. A more extensive report on the Cycle 31 Proposal Selection is here.

For JWST, we had the thrill in July of the anniversary image to celebrate the first year of science observations, and we are fast approaching the second anniversary of the exquisite launch by Arianespace. It was incredible to see your response to the Cycle 3 Call for Proposals in October, with an unprecedented number of over 1900 proposals received, and with almost a third of those led by European PIs.

As the year draws to a close, we are also delighted to announce our ESA Hubble and Webb Calendar for 2024 here, which showcases some of the spectacular images from both missions taken in 2023. Finally, let me wish you and your families all the very best for the holiday season and the new year!
