Our Place in Space exhibition to be launched
26 July 2016
For more than two decades the science and images from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope — a successful collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency — have helped us to see further, shifted our perspective and inspired astronomers, artists and public alike to ask, and endeavour to answer, the deep existential questions that we all share: Where do we came from? Where are we going? Are we alone? These are questions that are of great interest to professional astronomers, but also have deep meaning for everybody on Earth.
Based on an idea of Antonella Nota and Anna Caterina Bellati, the new, upcoming travelling exhibition Our Place in Space raises exactly this question: Where does humanity fit into the grand scheme of the Universe? In the exhibition, astronomers and artists present their own interpretations of where we are, where we belong, what our past might have been and what our future might look like, through Hubble images, artworks and installations. Combining perspectives in the exhibition by bringing together art and science gives a unique, and more complete, view of the Universe we live in.
Visit Our Place in Space and start a journey that brings you from the exhibition space to the borders of the observable Universe. The exhibition explores how we have expanded our travel horizons to break out from the boundaries of our planet’s atmosphere and explore everything from our neighbourhood in space in manned missions to the furthest reaches of time and space with Hubble and its counterparts.
The exhibition will open on 1 February 2017 in Venice, Italy. See the list of exhibition venues to find the location nearest to you.
Exhibition executive committee: Antonella Nota (ESA/STScI; chair), Anna Caterina Bellati (Bellati Edrs.), Ken Carpenter (NASA), Lars Christensen (ESO), Carol Christian (STScI), Roger Davies (Oxford, UK) and Hussein Jirdeh (STScI)
